Abstract:

This assessment and updated status report for the greater short-horned lizard (Phrynosoma hernandesi) in Canada updates the known biology and ecology for the species, including its distribution globally and in Canada; habitat requirements and trends; and the species’ diet, life cycle and reproduction, physiology, dispersal, interspecific interactions, adaptability, and predation pressure. Populations size, fluctuation, and trends, as well as limiting factors and threats for the species, are discussed. With this update, the status (Special Concern, April 1992) for the greater short-horned lizard was changed to Endangered in April 2007. In Canada, the species exists in fewer than 10 scattered locations that are severely fragmented. Most of the lizard’s populations are threatened by ongoing oil and gas development, road proliferation, proposed mineral development, and increasing human presence.
