Abstract:

This assessment and update status report for the five-lined skink (Eumeces fasciatus) in Canada updates the known biology, including genetic characteristics, and ecology of the species by 2007, when the species was split into two populations (Carolinian and Great Lakes/St. Lawrence) and the status of one was changed to Endangered. Distribution of the species in Canada and habitat requirements of the two populations are described/updated, as well as trends regarding and protection of habitat. Information and observations about the species’ reproduction, growth and survival, hibernation, food habits, predator defense, physiology, movements and dispersal, interspecific interactions, and adaptability are included. Population sizes and trends for the two populations are discussed, as well as fluctuations and trends. Limiting factors for and threats to the species are included. Status of the Carolinian population was changed to Endangered for several reasons. The five-lined skink is the only lizard in eastern Canada, and the Carolinian population occurs in only 4 or 5 small, completely isolated populations on the shores of lakes Erie, St. Clair, and Huron. Threats include loss and degradation of microhabitat, illegal collecting, increased mortality on roads, and increased depredation by raccoons, coyotes, dogs, and cats. The Great Lakes/St. Lawrence population has Special Concern status. It is known from about 84 local populations but faces similar threats as the Carolinian population. Increasing development in the species' range will make populations more isolated and more susceptible to stochastic events of small sites.
