Abstract:

In 2008, Idaho Natural Heritage Program (IDNHP), Latah Soil and Water Conservation District (LSWCD), and US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) initiated a multi-phase project to find, document, and conserve Palouse and Canyon Grassland remnants in Latah County. The threatened species Spalding's catchfly (Silene spaldingii) occurs in Palouse and Canyon Grasslands. The intent was to inventory grassland remnants that may support Spalding's catchfly populations or suitable habitat for reintroduction. The Latah County project served as a pilot model designed to be expanded into adjacent counties where Palouse and Canyon Grasslands are present and have historically occurred. In 2011, efforts began to expand this project into Nez Perce County, beginning with Phase 1—identifying and delineating Palouse and Canyon Grassland remnants using GIS and compiling landowner information for these potential remnants. Within Nez Perce County, we delineated 229 potential remnants—74 representing Palouse Grasslands and 155 Canyon Grasslands. During the next phases of this project we will work toward ground truthing and assessing these potential remnants and identifying cooperative landowners that are willing to implement conservation projects on their land.
