Abstract:

This document explains how to use an extension that can be added to ArcView called Conservation Assessment Tools, a suite of tools designed to produce rapid conservation assessments based on IUCN Categories and Criteria (IUCN 2001). Preliminary conservation assessments based on extent of occurrence (EOO), area of occupancy (AOO), number of subpopulations, and number of locations can be calculated for either a single species or multiple species through a batch process. This document explains each of three tools: 1) plot species, 2) preliminary IUCN assessment – single, and 3) preliminary IUCN assessment – batch. It also explains results for the latter two tools and provides references regarding relevant issues. (Tools are also currently being rewritten for use with ArcGIS.)
