This conservation assessment provides a comprehensive synthesis of existing information about the western painted turtle (Chrysemys picta bellii), drawing on literature throughout the painted turtle’s range but emphasizing work on the subspecies in environments similar to those where it is found in Oregon. Classification of the species and its description and the species’ biology and ecology are covered: habitat use; diet; aquatic and terrestrial movements; breeding biology and behavior; demography; range, distribution, and abundance; and population trends. The assessment also synthesizes and critiques previous and current research, monitoring, and management efforts relevant to conservation of the western painted turtle in Oregon. Threats to the species are listed; management and restoration activities that could improve conditions are discussed. Needs for inventory, monitoring, and research are prioritized. The document includes case studies and a references section.
