Abstract:

We report the status of American Falls Reservoir's avifauna with an annotated list of over 270 bird species based on a literature review and our field observations of 30 years. This enhances the understanding of Idaho bird distribution and abundance in a region of the state with a paucity of records. For its size, American Falls Reservoir has the highest diversity and abundance of birds in Idaho, and one of the highest in the Intermountain West. Systematic surveys have found hundreds of thousands of migrating and wintering waterfowl, and tens of thousands of migrating shorebirds and wading birds, visiting annually. A wide variety of land birds occur. Over 60 bird species considered rare in Idaho have been recorded.
