Abstract:

Between January and March of 2016, 27 of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve’s (CRMO) 400+ known caves were surveyed for hibernating bats. This is the fourth year of annual bat hibernation surveys at CRMO. Bats in Arco Tunnel and other hibernacula were identified as Townsend’s big-eared bats (Corynorhinus townsendii) and undifferentiated species of Myotis, and several were not identifiable to genus. Temperature and humidity readings were recorded throughout caves and in the immediate space of hibernating bats. Snow conditions limited the ability of staff to survey as many caves in 2016 as they have in other years.
