Bartelt relates an incident he witnessed while conducting a study of movements and habitat use of adult western toad in the Targhee National Forest in southeastern Idaho. In August 1995, after years of drought had prevented successful reproduction at a pond that was important for western toad production, many recently metamorphosed toadlets were trampled by domestic sheep being herded through the pond area to private land.
