Abstract:

This brief update summarizes a couple of highlights of bat use over several years for three southeastern Idaho caves that are identified as critical hibernacula and roost areas: Kids, Cinder Wall, and Fools Wading Pool. Fools Wading Pool Cave is one of the largest hibernacula for western small-footed myotis in western North America (with 5 surveys from 2001 to 2013 indicating a mean of 87 individuals, SD of 51.4, and range of 32–146 individuals). Since January 2013, GSS has set AnaBat detectors year-round at Kids, Cinder Wall, and Fools Wading Pool caves to record from 30 minutes before sunset to 30 minutes after sunrise to document fluctuations in bat activity across seasons. From January 2013 to June 2014, call file numbers indicated that bat activity increased across all caves from May to September. The call files will be analyzed to identify species and species groups that are using the three caves.
