Abstract:

The Banbury Springs lanx ([Banbury Springs limpet], Lanx n sp.; undescribed; BSL) was listed as endangered throughout its range on December 14, 1992. All BSL colonies are isolated from each other and restricted to their present locations. The population size, abundance, and trends of the BSL are largely uncertain as little density and trend information exists. The 2006 5-Year Status Review for the BSL recommended that an annual monitoring program be implemented at the 4 BSL colonies (USFWS 2006). In 2008, USFWS and the Idaho Power Company initiated the first long-term monitoring program for the BSL at one spring. On January 13, 2011, biologists with USFWS and Idaho Power returned to Banbury Springs to continue long-term monitoring of the BSL colony at that location. That monitoring event was only the second at this site since it was established in 2008. In 2011, the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Office (IFWO) committed to continuing BSL monitoring at the other 3 occupied spring locations, in addition to continuing monitoring at the Banbury Springs colony. The objectives of this monitoring effort are to 1) determine presence/absence at the four colonies on an annual basis and 2) collect information sufficient to monitor BSL population trends on an annual basis at representative locations within three of the four colonies. This report gives the results of 2012 surveys of the four springs.
