Species Account:
This animal was a small female white tail, probably last spring's fawn. It was lying dead on Highway 200 about half way between Clark Fork and the Montana state line. This curve is a busy deer crossing with limited visibility and has high white tail mortality. I was returning home from a night shift at Cabinet Gorge dam when I saw the carcass, and it had not been there when I went to work, so I was confident it was reasonably fresh. Neck and left foreleg appeared broken, but other external damage was minimal. However, upon opening the abdominal cavity, I found extensive damage to digestive tract and lungs, and severe contamination of much of the body meat and left fore quarter with digestive tract contents--hence the limited salvage.
