Very close encounter while hiking with my wife and two dogs on leash. Black colored wolf spotted at close range in stream bed wearing a red presumably radio collar. Estimated distance between me and wolf was no more than 30 ft. Upon noticing me it nonchalantly exited the stream and climbed up the opposing stream bank and into vegetative cover. My wife and i got one last look at it as it appeared from the cover now 25 yds away from us and crossed the trail that we were on. Thats when we both noticed the red collar. Proceeding down the trail to the creek we came upon a still breathing but motionless five point bull elk lying in the creek bed. We took a quick picture and short video to document the scene and proceeded to head back the the trailhead parking lot.
