Habitat Description:
At elevation 5950 ft on a treeless, exposed area of decomposed and more recent aa flows. The soil on the oldest flow consists of loess and decomposing cinders, while the more recent flow is principally decomposed aa. Vegetation is noticeably different on the two flows. The decomposed aa flow supports scattered, mixed stands of Artemisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, O(puntia) polyacantha, and O. rhodantha, as well as the herb species present on the older flow. In the loess and decomposing cinder area, the shrubs A. tridentata, C(hamaebatiaria) millefolium, Chrysothamnus (Ericameria) nauseosus, C. viscidiflorus, and P. tridentata and the herbs Allium sp., Calochortus sp., E(riogonum) umbellatum, Mentzelia laevicaulis, P(hacelia) leucophylla, Phlox sp., and Potentilla sp. are common (Horning and Barr 1970).
