Species Account:
Between November 28 and December 21 I have found 12 dead doves on the ground in various parts of my yard. Yesterday, January 6, I saw a dove on the ground unable to fly away from me that appeared disoriented and sick. I took it to the Ruth Melichar Bird Center in Boise and Susan instructed me to notify Fish and Game of the issue at my location in Nampa. In addition to the birds found dead, I have seen the two stray cats on my property with Eurasian Collared Doves which is unusual. There are also several piles of gray feathers around that indicated birds that have probably been unable to fly away from the cats. Also one Sharp Shinned Hawk was seen in my front yard with dead dove. I have many Quail and Mourning Dove that reside on my property but so far the only dead birds I have found are the Eurasian Collared Doves.
I will discontinue feeding the birds for a few weeks as indicated in the news article. And will clean all feeders with bleach solution.
