Species Account:
Turtle was spotted crossing our gravel drive, having come out of a drainage ditch at the west of our property. The ditch level had been deeper than normal due to the high flows on the Boise river, but has been dropping along with the lessening flows of the river, so it could have been seeking deeper water. As we got close to the turtle it became defensive, started to hiss at us and began to crawl back to the ditch. The encounter lasted just a few minutes. Two years ago with the exceptionally high water several painted turtles settled in the ditch, and one even laid a nest about this same time of season, just after a thunderstorm, but the turtle spotted today was much larger, maybe about 12" from the head to tail section of the shell, was darker, with no bright lines, and it had a long tail...I would estimate it would weight 10-15 pounds.
