Suggestions for other areas to survey:
The population of LESA on Mores Mountain appears to be made up of two subpopulations separated by a distance of approximately 200 yards. However, subpopulation 1 is made up of two small concentrations (hereafter referred to as 1a and 1b) which are in close proximity to each other (less than 150 feet apart), with subpopulation 1a being the originally observed Mores Mountain population. Over past 10 years, the number of plants observed in the subpopulation 1 area has fluctuated from less than 10 to more than 100. While the first plants were discovered at the summit of Mores Mountain, additional plants within suitable habitat around the original site have been located. Subpopulation 2 is more than 200 yards from subpopulation 1 and is slightly steeper and to a certain extent less impacted.
Management needs for this population:
The trail leading around the mountain and to the summit of Mores Mountain (Mores Mountain Interpretive Trail; FS 190A01) is popular with hikers and early season (May/June) trampling may impact the populations. In 2016, the number of plants seen on the summit were less than 20; in 2017 the number were more than 5 times as many.
Additional population comments:
There are sites that have not been examined for the species. The summit of Mores Mountain is impacted by recreational hikers. Great environmental education opportunities exist.
