Survey
Survey Site:
Sunset Mountain/Rabbit Creek Trail
Survey Intensity:
cursory or incidental
Population
EO Number:
40
EO ID:
27856
Population Area:
10 acres estimated
More potential habitat to survey:
yes
Suggestions for other areas to survey:
Additional potential habitat along the south east side of the Rabbit Creek Trail #167 from the Rabbit Creek Trailhead and to the south and east of the Sunset Lookout. Approximately 60 acres of additional potential habitat that has not been surveyed.
Monitoring or research needs for this population:
Continual monitoring of area to access impact of trailhead and motorized trail through population. The purpose of the 2007/2008 Rabbit Creek trailhead and trail reconstruction project was to define parking areas, eliminate parallel trails and reduce unauthorized off-trail riding. The 2017 site visited was a check for impacts imposed by the use of the trailhead area for staging during the 2016 Pioneer Fire. No impacts were observed, and the fire did not directly reach the trailhead or the trail (fire boundary is about 1 mile to the north of the Rabbit Creek Trailhead).
Management needs for this population:
Control impacts from Rabbit Creek Trailhead parking and motorized trail through population on FS Trail #167.
Additional population comments:
Population first observed 6/27/2007 (K. Beall) while conducting a botanical survey for FS trail #167 trailhead construction (Rabbit Creek Trail Reconstruction) below Sunset Lookout, and again on 6/26/2008 during trailhead construction implementation. Visit in 2017 was conducted as part of Design Feature implementation as part of the Pioneer Fire Salvage and Reforestation project to assess any impact from use of the area for staging during the Pioneer Fire of 2016. No impacts were observed. During the 2017 visit, Sacajawea’s bitterroot plants were observed in roughly the same footprint as observed on the original discovery of the population in 2007.
