A small, long-tailed rodent, the western harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis Baird, 1858) is known from southwestern Canada southward to southern Mexico, and from California eastward to Indiana. It lives from 250 feet below sea level (Death Valley) to approximately 13,000 feet (volcanoes in Mexico). Besides its characteristics and distribution, this species account summarizes what is known of the mouse’s form and physiology, ontogeny and reproduction, ecology, genetics, and behavior.
