Abstract:

This report presents the results of surveys for the Idaho dunes tiger beetle (Cicendela arenicola), especially in previously unsurveyed areas outside of known areas of presence. The surveys were conducted from 31 March 1995 to 5 June 1995, north of the Snake River in the BLM’s Boise, Burley, Idaho Falls, and Shoshone Districts; the USFWS’s Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge; and the IDFG’s Sand Creek Wildlife Management Area. Thirty new Idaho dunes tiger beetle habitat sites were documented in five counties, one of which has not had an Idaho dunes tiger beetle documented. Beetle occurrence was also documented for the first time at Sand Creek Wildlife Management Area. Habitat quality varied by different degrees of vegetative stabilization and physical disturbances. Crested wheatgrass seedings and the encroachment of nonnative weedy species have reduced and degraded some available habitat sites. The effect of physical disturbances caused by livestock and off-road vehicle use need further study. Adult beetles were not found when the sand surface temperature was lower than 73 °F. A reliable key for identifying tiger beetles is needed because of color/pattern variation within the same species and similarities among different species.
