Abstract:

This lynx conservation assessment and strategy (LCAS) for the Canada lynx is a draft that was distributed [to parties involved in its writing and in lynx management?] for comment prior to revision and release in 2013. It provides a full revision of the 2000 LCAS, incorporating all prior amendments and clarifications and substantial new scientific information that has emerged since 2000 including related parts of the Lynx Recovery Plan Outline; it also draws on experience gained in implementing the 2000 LCAS. The draft document has been reorganized and condensed to reduce redundancy. It summarizes the purpose and history of the LCAS since 2000 and notes changes made since the 2000 edition, provides a history of ESA listing actions, and lists guiding principles in developing a 3rd edition LCAS. The document gives an overview of lynx ecology (including information about the species’ activity, diet, behavior, distribution, population density, habitat, genetic variation, relationship with other carnivores). Another section examines anthropogenic influences on the species and its habitat—influences such as climate change, habitat fragmentation, incidental trapping, recreation, and fire management. Several geographic areas are then examined individually for risk factors. Conservation strategies are discussed, as well as research and monitoring needs.
