Abstract:

The Mid-Winter Trumpeter Swan Survey is an annual survey conducted in late January or early February. The survey is a cooperative effort of numerous entities and intended to provide a total count of trumpeter swans in the Rocky Mountain Population (RMP). The 2002 Mid-Winter Trumpeter Swan Survey was conducted during 10-15 February. We counted 4,415 trumpeter swans (white birds and cygnets), compared to 3,975 swans last year. The number of white birds increased from last year by 19%, and the number of cygnets decreased 24% from last year. Of the 4,415 birds, 89% are believed to emigrate from Canada (swans that nest in Canada and winter in the Tri-State region) and 11% are from U.S. group (swans that nest and winter in the Tri-State region).
