Abstract:

During summer 1994, the Craig Mountain area, Nez Perce County, Idaho, was surveyed for bat species by netting and developing acoustic recordings of appropriate areas. Eleven of 14 possible species were confirmed, including Plecotus [Corynorhinus] townsendii indexed as a C2 species when the study was initiated. A late winter survey of mines along the Salmon and Snake rivers failed to locate hibernating bats. The temperature profile of the canyons may result in this condition. This report details the results of field assessment of bat populations, in the Craig Mountains of Idaho. The nomenclature of species expected in the study area has been assessed from Hall, (1981), Van Zyll de Jong (1984), and Jones, et al. (1992), including species names updated from the nomenclature in Hall (1981) and Wilson and Reeder (1993). I have retained the genus Plecotus, although recent taxonomic studies have resurrected the genus Chorynorhinus as contrasted to the generic recommendation proposed by Handley (1959). Only The Nature conservancy was accepting a reversion to the genus Chorynorhinus for United States populations of big-eared bats when this report was written. [Keller (1985) published a key to the bats of Idaho that reviews most of the nomenclature for Idaho species.]
