Abstract:

The lichen flora of Montana reflects its topographic, geologic, and climatic diversity. We list the lichen flora of the state, annotating it to indicate the ecological context for each species. The sources for the records are identified from the literature and herbarium collections. So far, a total of 1 074 species are documented from Montana. Of these, 283 species are new for the state and 1 9 are new to North America (Aspicilia intermutans, Hydropunctaria scabra, lonaspis obtecta, Micarea anterior, Parabagliettoa disjuncta, Phaeocalicium boreale, Polyblastia amota, Rhizocarpon atrovirellum, Sporodictyon minutum, Staurothele frustulenta, Toninia taurica, Verrucaria breussii, V. hochstetteri, V. dolomitica, V. fischeri, V. kondaensis, V. poeltii, V. putnae, and V. subvirens). Solorina monospora, found in Alberta, is also new to North America, but it has not yet been found in Montana. An additional 414 are listed as reported from nearby states and provinces and likely to occur in the state. Reports under 553 synonyms are also given, as well as 32 questionable reports and 89 reports that are considered erroneous and excluded from the flora. We include five new combinations: Lecanorapaddensis, Lobaria anomala, Lobaria anthraspis, Rostania quadrjfida, and Scytinium tacomae. <br>

We discuss the rare, threatened, and endangered lichens of Montana. Priorities for surveys and monitoring are evaluated by placing species in one of eight categories, based on all combinations of global rarity, ease of detection, and habitat vulnerability.
