Abstract:

We evaluated 6 criteria (water quality, landscape diversity, plant community diversity, plant biodiversity, animal biodiversity, and non-native plant infestation) to assess the relative ecological integrity of 25 watersheds in the Palouse and Lower Clearwater subbasins of west-central Idaho. Eight watersheds ranked relatively high in conservation value, 9 medium, and 8 low. The Eldorado Creek-Dollar Creek watershed had the greatest value due largely to its richness of rare plant communities and at-risk species, and lack of invasive plants. Columbia Basin Palouse Prairie and Open Water ecological systems and Riparian Woodland habitat (consisting of 5 ecological systems) were the most important land cover types for overall biodiversity. Last, we identified 2 clusters, each consisting of 11 contiguous watersheds of significant ecological integrity and conservation values in the relatively inaccessible and higher elevations of the study area. The conservation of these 2 clusters would ensure the proper maintenance of much of the ecological values associated with wetlands in the Palouse and Lower Clearwater subbasins. Recommendations for conservation at varying spatial scales were provided.
