Abstract:

Wetlands of high ecological integrity and conservation value were identified in the Beaver-Camas and Medicine Lodge watersheds of eastern Idaho. Wetland habitat diversity, biodiversity significance, condition, and landscape context were assessed at two spatial scales. The landscape assessment was conducted at the subbasin level using existing spatial data. The site level assessment began with a coarse filter assessment of potential wetland conservation sites. We then conducted a fine filter field assessment. A combination of spatial and field collected data was analyzed to rank wetland sites for conservation priority. Four “Conservation and Restoration Opportunity Wetlands” were described in the landscape assessment. Eleven wetland conservation sites were assessed at the sub-watershed scale. The abiotic and biotic wetland features, habitat diversity, biodiversity significance, condition, and landscape context of each site was described. Conservation strategies, restoration opportunities, and management recommendations were also included for each site. This information is intended to assist governmental and non-governmental entities involved in wetland planning, conservation, management, and restoration.
