Abstract:

This document about terrestrial gastropods in Idaho consists of a checklist, an identification section, and species accounts for terrestrial gastropods occurring in Idaho within the administrative boundary of the Northern Region of the USDA Forest Service. This information is intended to support surveys and resource management planning, with the intended audience being agency staff and biologists who are not gastropod specialists. More broadly, however, these materials are envisioned to be a basis for a field guide to Idaho’s fauna to be accessible to a global audience and to facilitate advances in our understanding of molluscan diversity and ecology. The checklist includes 80 species of terrestrial snails and slugs and is a revision of a previous state checklist by Terry Frest and Edward Johannes published in 2000. This new guide adds several species that have been discovered in the state or newly described since that earlier work. It does not include all species that appeared in the earlier work, but, as a rule, only those having location records or having been discovered through literature review, museum specimen query, or new survey data. Some species included by Frest were not substantiated with specific locality records in their survey reports and were not discovered since during review of other information sources for this guide. Most of the species appearing on the 2000 list but not included here are nonnative. There are also unverified museum specimens for a number of species not known to occur in the state. In many cases, these specimens would represent dramatic range extensions, but many of these “new” species either closely resemble or are related to ones known to occur in the state. The checklist does not include such additions pending verification of specimen identifications. All land snails described in this guide belong to the Phylum Mollusca, Class Gastropoda, and Order Stylommatophora. The checklist follows the systematic order and higher level taxonomy presented in Bouchet and Rocroi (2005). The guide’s Identification section is intended to facilitate identification to species by highlighting the most important shell characteristics for snails and other characteristics for slugs. The bulk of the guide is the Species Accounts. For each species covered, the account provides synonyms, subspecies names (if any), a physical description, distribution (including thumbnail map) and habitat information, conservation status, and selected references, including, separately, any known for information about internal anatomy.
