The decomposition of Potamogeton diversifolius Raf. was monitored for loss of dry weight, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, and zinc in the field and in the laboratory at 11C and 21 C. A comparison of two techniques was also made under laboratory conditions. Under field conditions the mobility of the ions was K > Na > Mn > Zn > Mg > Fe > Ca. In the laboratory the mobility the she same as in the field except that Zn tended to be accumulated. The initial loss of material was by physical leaching with microbial degradation occurring after 10 days. Loss of material from mesh bags was primarily in the form of fragments after 10 days.
