The author applauds W. S. Creighton for advances made (in his book Ants of North America) in the taxonomy of the carpenter ants belonging to the Camponotus herculeanus group, especially for recognizing the synonymy of herculeanus var. whymperi with the “typical” herculeanus. The bulk of this article, however, presents a case that neither Camponotus pennsylvanicus modoc Wheeler nor C. pennsylvanicus ferrugineus (Fabricius) should be considered a subspecies of C. pennsylvanicus.
