Abstract:

This report presents the results of a study to examine the nutrients in plants that are eaten by the northern Idaho ground squirrel, Spermophilus brunneus brunneus [Urocitellus brunneus]. The study was undertaken to better understand reasons for the decline of the endemic squirrel. Summaries are provided about what is known about the squirrel's history, hypotheses for its decline, nutrient requirements of the squirrel, the study plan, study results, and a discussion of results. Recommendations are also presented.
