Abstract:

A grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis L.) survey was conducted in north Idaho's Selkirk Mountains in 1981. This survey updates and supplements Layser's (1978) work. Fifty-nine reliable accounts of grizzly bear sightings or evidence since 1975 are reported. The Selkirks, in conjunction with the Salmo River area, the Purcell and West Cabinet mountains, and southern British Columbia appear to provide adequate suitable habitat to support a viable grizzly bear population.
