Abstract:

There have been many questions in recent years about Coryphantha vivipara (= Escobaria vivpara) and C. missouriensis (=E. missouriensis) in Idaho. The UBC collection (Accession No. V167955; Fred Fodor s.n.) is one of the few Idaho records. According to Flora of North America (2003), both species are erroneously reported from Idaho, and are actually Pediocactus simpsonii (though a few on the western border near the junction with Oregon and Washington are P. nigrispinus).
Pediocactus simpsonii is more than one species, even after P. nigrispinus is removed. Curtis Bjork has been studying this for a couple years now. The populations in east-central Idaho and adjacent Montana are probably not typical P. simpsonii (the type came from Utah). He hasn't firmly decided that yet, partly because there's a lot to wade through in the work Hochstätter. The annotation to the UBC specimen might not be the last.
The Fodor s.n. specimen is now annotated to Pediocactus simpsonii.
