Abstract:

This monumental work is an exhaustive taxonomic study treating every native or introduced species, variety, and hybrid of cactus known to occur in North America north of Mexico. Although concentrated in the American Southwest and in Central and South America, cacti range into Canada, New England, Florida, the West Indies, and the Galapagos Islands; in many areas they are the dominant plant cover. Extensive introductory chapters treat the general character and structure of cacti; their reproduction, physiology, evolution, distribution, classification, conservation, and uses by man; their natural associations with other plants; climatic patterns affecting the distribution of cacti; the history of cactus collection and study; and the research methods employed by the author. For each species or variety, the main text provides botanical and common names, morphological description, habitat, attitudinal and geographic limits, floristic associations, intergradations and affinities, and economic or ecological importance.
