This study was initiated to evaluate the status and management of the isolated population of Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryxivorus) breeding at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Oregon. It was conducted as part of a larger study concerned with habitat selection and the evolution of polygyny in Bobolinks (Wittenberger 1976). My purpose here is to report on the current status and breeding biology of the Malheur population. The results also provide some pertinent evidence for evaluating current mating system theory and suggest a new factor that may affect the timing of breeding events.
