Abstract:

An inventory of the waterfowl in the vicinity of Challis, Idaho, was done by the author for the Bureau of Land Management during the summer of 1977. During this inventory, Jimmy Smith Lake, located 10 km south of Clayton, Custer County, was visited six times between 9 June and 25 August. Also, Sullivan Lake, 5 km southwest of Clayton, was visited once, and Herd Lake, 50 km south of Challis, was visited three times. During each visit, counts of waterfowl were made using a 40 power spotting scope. The author found the Barrow’s Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica) to be a summer resident on these three lakes.
