Abstract:

Slickspot (or Idaho) peppergrass (Lepidium papilliferum; Brassicaceae) has been one of Idaho’s highest priority plant conservation concerns for a number of years (Mancuso et al., 1998). On October 8, 2009, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) listed slickspot peppergrass as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act (USFWS, 2009). In August, 2012, the United States District Court vacated this ruling (Otter v. Salazar, 2012). The USFWS currently lists slickspot peppergrass as Proposed Endangered (USFWS, 2013).

Mountain Home Air Force Base has monitored slickspot peppergrass on Juniper Butte Range (JBR) since its establishment in 2000. This population is also tracked by the Idaho Conservation Data Center (ICDC), which maintains a database of element occurrences (EO) of rare plants within Idaho. The JBR population is the eastern portion of EO 16, also known as sub-EO 704. This document is a report on slickspot peppergrass monitoring at JBR in 2013, and addresses the status of the eastern portion of EO 16.
