White-tailed Deer Survival

White-tailed deer are the most abundant big game species in north Idaho. Therefore, they likely play a very important role in the predator-prey dynamics in northern Idaho.

We’re collaborating with the University of Idaho and University of Montana to use GPS collars and remote cameras to monitor adult and newborn fawn survival, and how predators are using white-tailed deer, in several north Idaho study areas.

We’re also investigating seasonal habitat selection and movements and the effects of severe weather and nutrition on white-tailed deer population performance.

All of this information will be used in the larger predator-prey project and to further develop camera-based methods of estimating white-tailed deer numbers and fawn survival.
