Idaho Fish and Game and the University of Idaho are moving into the second year of a research program to study how often anglers catch wild steelhead, and how well those fish survive after being released. Researchers rely on anglers to provide crucial information by reporting tagged fish that they catch.

Fish and Game has used guides for many years to collect samples from steelhead harvested on their trips. For this study, we gave a number of guides in Idaho a handheld PIT-tag reader that can detect the tag inside the fish. This allows guides to quickly detect a tag and release the fish.
Connecting streams, habitat improvements and monitoring efforts support spawning steelhead in the upper Salmon River

In 2007, Fish and Game began operating picket weirs and traps on multiple tributaries of the Salmon River to document the number of steelhead that enter certain tributaries to spawn. Fish and Game gathers information such as length, weight, sex, origin, and other data on the fish before releasing it upstream to spawn. The information collected is then used to evaluate ongoing habitat restoration projects and guide future management decisions.
