I would like to salvage this animal and agree to the terms of salvage:
I safely, humanely, and lawfully dispatched this injured animal:
Probably. I'm a bit uncertain.
Carcass found on the northbound lane of SE Main St., Mountain Home, Elmore County, the afternoon of 9 February. I suspect that it was a Townsend's Ground Squirrel, which a field guide tells me likes to be around irrigated farmland, which is a dominant land-use along this stretch of rural Elmore County roadway. I spotted the carcass while bicycling and on the return leg of my ride I spotted two more dead ground squirrels on the same roadway. On 8 Feb., I counted 14 dead ground squirrels on the surface of state Hwy. 67 between the city of Mountain Home and Mountain Home Air Force Base. No doubt, there were others as well. It is much too dangerous to stop along this roadway, given the volume of motor vehicle traffic.
