Species Account:
Moose was found laying dead with 8+crows feeding on it around 2pm on 12/26. I went back at 4pm and salvaged head and hide.
Moose was laying off the south shoulder of Highway87 (left side of road if traveling towards MT287/Ennis) very near the intersection of Highway 287 with Henry's Lake Road (which is around mile marker 5 I believe). Moose must have been hit sometime after the morning of Christmas eve since it was not at kill site morning of 12/24 when my family traveled to our cabin up henry's lake road from Idaho falls. When I got to the moose, one hind quarter was missing and both front quarters. Should have looked closer to see if I saw tracks around kill site and/or observed if teeth/ripping/knawing evidence or cutting tool evidence on missing quarter sections. My first thought was that wolves or cougar hauled off missing quarters but my dad had thought that perhaps someone else salvaged meat at time of vehicle accident. Hind quarter/leg remaining at kill site was busted likely by car accident. One horn was sheared off also, it seems also due to car crash. Bull seemed like it was in good health (certainly not emaciated) with nice full healthy coat of hair and good fat reserves. A bunch of stinky cud/feeding content drained from espophagus so moose likely was in feeding mode/actively browsing when hit by car.
