Species Account:
As I rounded a sweeping right hand turn three whitetail does/fawns came running from the timber on the right side of the highway. I was doing approximately 50 mph and slowed considerably as I saw another deer jump from the same place as the others. I immediately saw his (spike) antlers, but it was too late as my vehicle hit his left front shoulder leg with the right front of my vehicle. After hitting him I pulled over on the shoulder and checked out the damage to my vehicle before going to check on the buck. When I approached him I noticed he was still alive, so I kept my distance (I am an avid hunter and guide and know better than to get too close to any wild animal). I then walked back to my vehicle and called the Bonner County Sherriff's office dispatch and reported the incident. Once I got back to my vehicle another vehicle pulled up behind me. At first I thought it was the Sherriff, but the man identified himself as Mark Johnson, a Bonner County Bailiff. He said he carried a 'duty' pistol and could take care of the buck. He called dispatch to verify he could do it. After getting the approval we approached the buck which was off the road, but it had expired. He then told me about the 'salvage' system and after checking once again with dispatch, informed me I could salvage the animal with the requirement of completing this permit.
