Species Account:
On Saturday May 9th, 2020 approximately 9:45 pm, My wife and I were returning to Boise from camping near Idaho City. We were just North of Gardner and Hwy 21 when we saw the mule deer. We drastically reduced speed so as to allow the Mule Deer to cross to the Northbound shoulder of the road. As we went to continue, the deer turned 180 degrees and struck the driver side headlight and bumper doing noticeable damage to the truck. We then pulled off to the side of the road and turned on our emergency blinkers. I left the vehicle and walked back to find the animal to check on it. I found it back on the northbound shoulder. After watching for a few minutes to see if it would run off, I noticed it wasn’t moving, just lifting its head and struggling to breath. I then shot the animal one time in the head to dispatch it quickly so as to not let it suffer any longer.
The male buck had velveteen antlers that looked to be the start of forked antlers. It was roughly 200 - 250 pounds as it took my wife and I about 10 min to load it in the truck. It’s fur was a tan to gray color and it had the white rump with black marked tail.
