Species Account:
On 11/30/19 just before 7:00 p.m., two white-tailed does entered the highway directly in front of my vehicle, as I was traveling 60 mph due south on U.S. 95 at approximately MM 501 (at the top of Peterson Hill), just south of Bonners Ferry. I braked and swerved, but they suddenly changed course, turning to run back the way they came, and the smaller doe lost its footing in the middle of the roadway. I was unable to avoid it and hit it with the front passenger side corner of my vehicle, damaging the front grill/bumper area. The larger doe was not hit and ran into the trees. I pulled to the side of the road, and my husband, who was my sole passenger, exited the vehicle and, together with our son. who was following in a different vehicle, dragged the injured deer off the road. My husband called the Boundary County Sheriff's Office. There were no deputies available at the time to respond. Our son retrieved one of our firearms, and my husband humanely dispatched the injured animal. We went to the Sheriff's Office in Bonners Ferry, where we completed and submitted a report. We then returned to the location of the doe, loaded it into our vehicle, and took it home to salvage the meat. It appeared that this pair may have been an adult doe and her female offspring.
