Species Account:
The Elk was brown and tan cow/calf. I was notified the Elk was injured and in the water (Lake Pend Oreille) at the shores edge near the Trestle Creek boat launch. It was submerged to neck level with it's head and neck out of the water. As I approached I could see it's right rear hoof and lower leg were broken to where it was visible from the left side of the animal The lower portion of that leg was also nearly severed and attached only by the achilles tendon and skin. The Elk also had visible head injuries (abrasions to hide on top of head). The Elk tried to move away from me and I noted that neither of its back legs appeared to be functional. Also, I noted significant abrasions on the top and right side of it's hind end. This area of the shore line is just below highway 200 and the railroad tracks that traverse near the shore line. Based on the Elk's appearance and apparent injuries, I believed it to have been struck by either highway traffic or a train. The area is remote and there were no members of the public in the area at that time. Based on the above described circumstances, I was able to safely dispatch the Elk. Idaho Fish and Game Officer, Tom Whelen, arrived at the scene by boat just after the Elk was dispatched. He observed the Elk's condition and injuries. He concurred with the action(s) taken and directed me to complete this submission. The Elk remains were removed from the shoreline, with help from citizens, to be processed as a salvaged animal.
