Species Account:
Found the dead bull while checking my trap line in GMU 33. Just before last light on October 1st, I smelled something dead just off the road I was driving on. Further investigation revealed a large bull elk that had been dead for roughly a week in a encroached stand of timber about 200 yards from the road. I skinned the remains of the animal the next day, October 2nd, to determine cause of death. As a wildlife professional, I am certified and trained in field investigations and necropsies. I conducted a thorough investigation of the animal and the kill site. The bull appeared to have been in good condition and I did not find any blood on or around the animal. While I do not think this was a poaching case or wounding loss, predation or rut kill would be my best guess. I was not able to determine cause of death definitively. I called the IDFG enforcement desk to report my discovery on October 2nd at approximately 3 PM.
