Species Account:
I was driving at night along Howard Road taking my daughters friend home. About 3/4 of a mile from Hwy 54 there were tracks in the snow on the road like an accident had happened but there were no vehicles. Alongside the road in the ditch was a young elk bleeding with broken legs. I stopped and tried to spook it but it was unable to stand. I took the kids home and my wife and I returned about 30 minutes later and the elk was laying on its side only occasionally breathing and didn’t move when I walked up to it. I put the dying animal down with my cross bow and it then very quickly expired. This was a small elk tan body with brown neck, no antlers, female about 300 lbs in weight. We loaded the expired elk into my truck and took it home to harvest.
