Species Account:
This little buck was small and quite young, probably one of last spring's fawns. He had a black-tipped tail and a grey face- mule deer colors. He also had one cm long antler spikes hidden in the fur on his head. His weight was very good, and he had no obvious signs of illness or parasites. We first saw him laying on the side of the highway with his head raised, between Boise and Idaho City. We stopped to see if he could be saved. My best friend, C.J. DeCamp, was with me, and she has has good connections with local wildlife rehabilitation clinics. She tried to get him to stand up and we discovered that his hind leg was hanging by a flap of skin. The little buck also had a shattered front ankle. We know that the wildlife rehab centers cannot save a deer with only three legs. We waited until a pair of motorists stopped to help. I do not know their names. They had a gun. They first shot the deer in the head. Then, they cut its throat. They let us know that Idaho Laws allowed for the salvaging of roadkill. We took the body home in CJ's van. We plan to share the meat between both families, and CJ is going to try to tan the hide. It is possible that one of the two motorists who helped us, or my friend CJ, may have already filled out this form. If this is the case, I appologize.
