Species Account:
Red-necked Phalarope:--***--Lighting excellent; no obstructions.--***--Seen at about 30 yards with 15x45 Bushnell spotting scope for c. 15 minutes.--***--A flock of gulls flew up at one point, causing the entire phalarope flock to fly briefly around and then back to approximately the same place on the water. This event caused them to stop spinning for a time, after which they preened for two or three minutes, which provided good views of the flock.--***--I counted this group 3 or 4 times. They stayed pretty much to themselves, but did intermingle with a few Wilson's, which enabled bill length and plumage comparisons. All those I counted as red-necked phalaropes had red, not maroon coloration, which extended to side and/or around neck, and all had buff stripes on sides. Black heads on females and black/buff patterning on upperside of males clearly seen. Approximately 1/3 male, 2/3 female.
