Species Account:
VGSW: Not really unusual here after mid March. Certainly not "rare." Seen circling above and to the NE of site. Somewhat high, altitude varied from approx. 100 to 300 feet, but white underside, green upper, and white sides/rump clearly visible in sunlight. Seen with 10x40 binoculars.----FOSP: schistacea "Slate-colored" subspecies. Seen in small leafless bush with 10x40 binoculars at 20 feet for 1 minute slightly below eye level. Notes taken just after observation: Larger than song sparrow; somewhat smaller than spotted towhee. Head/upper body gray; wings and tail dull reddish/brown; reddish/brown spots forming vertical streaks on upper half of breast merging into central spot. Spots somewhat larger than on song sparrows, "smudgy" but at times triangular. Very small white eye ring. Alarm note sounded several times; appeared identical to CD recording, but this was heard after return home. I am from the South and am very familiar with this species as a winter resident--though a different subspecies, I believe.
