Species Account:
We observed a wolverine cross directly in front of our vehicle, close enough that we had to stop the vehicle. It came from the west side of the road at Middle Leigh Creek, and crossed over to the east side. We had a very clear view of the front, left side, and rear areas of the animal. It had long, dark brown fur, with lighter fur on the side, much longer than that of a bear. The nose was pointed, similar to a dog or bear. The head/body length was roughly 2 feet long; the tail was 8-10 inches long and bushy. It did not carry its tail high; it was just above the ground. We estimate the overall height was 24". The body was thick and the legs were short with long paws. The way it ran was very similar to a bear, with a lumbering kind of gait, but not particularly fast. It did not turn and look at us, and it did not break gait or slow down until it entered long grass on the east side of the road. It did stop momentarily in the long grass, and appeared to turn its head toward our vehicle, briefly, then it moved on and we lost sight of it.
