Survey
Survey Site:
Bray Spring
Survey Intensity:
fairly thorough
Population
Population Area:
1.5+ acres
More potential habitat to survey:
yes
Suggestions for other areas to survey:
High potential habitat is expansive in the area. More plants could be seen on adjacent private land, but only BLM land was surveyed here.
Monitoring or research needs for this population:
Monitor response of subpopulation 2 following the exclusion of livestock, if a proposed exclosure is built.
Management needs for this population:
Livestock are trespassing from adjacent private land, with no fence to prevent them from doing so. They are conjugating around subpopulation 2 toward the drainage area. An exclosure fence around the spring and adjacent uplands (along the BLM-private boundary) is being proposed by the BLM to resolve this.
Additional population comments:
Subpopulation 1 was surveyed on 5/8/2019, Subpopulation 2 was surveyed on 6/11/2019. The difference in vigor between the two subpopulations is major. Subpopulation 2 is where trespassing cattle are conjugating on their way to the shaded spring, and approximately half of the Fairfield milkvetch plants were browsed, some heavily or almost completely. It is also somewhat more weedy than Subpopulation 1. No browsing was observed on Fairfield milkvetch plants in Subpopulation 1.
